90-Minute Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

There’s nothing like the smell of freshly baked bread or buns coming from the kitchen. Who knew you could have delicious home baked buns in 90 minutes? These whole wheat dinner rolls can be served as an accompaniment to any meal or used for hamburger or sandwich buns. I love eating these buns with my pulled pork and black bean burger recipes. This is a simple recipe, which is doable, even for the amateur baker.

Makes 12-13 Rolls

Ingredients

1 tbsp sugar

1 ¼ cup warm water

1 tbsp active dry yeast

2 tbsp olive oil

1 large egg

1 tsp salt

2 ½ cup all purpose flour

1 cup whole wheat flour

*you may need a little more or less flour, depending on the humidity in the air

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar, water and yeast in a large mixing bowl. Let sit 2 minutes.

  2. Whisk in oil, egg and salt.

  3. Stir in the flour, 1 cup at a time. When you can no longer stir the mixture, turn it out on a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic (about 4-5 minutes).

  4. Divide the dough into 12 even pieces and shape into a balls. Place dough balls on a baking sheet, approximately 1 inch apart.

  5. Cover dough with a clean towel and place in a warm spot.

  6. Let rise for 45 minutes.

  7. After 45 minutes, preheat oven to 400°F.

  8. When oven is preheated, uncover and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Buns will rise and cook into each other.

  9. Remove from pan and place on wire rack to cool slightly before eating.

  10. Option: brush tops with margarine or salted butter while still hot.
